Minneriya is located in the North central province of Sri Lanka. The Minneriya National Wildlife Park was designated as a national park in the year 1997 although it was declared as a wild life sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring same was due to the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wild life in the surrounding area being in danger and required protection.
The Minneriya tank is of historical importance and provides sufficient water to the wildlife in the park. The park is also a feeding ground to the wild elephant population dwelling in the forests during the dry season. Elephants come to the Minneriya National Park from surrounding Towns such as Matale, Polannaruwa and Trincomalee. There are around 70 important bird areas in the Minneriya National Park and is a situated 182 kilo meter from Colombo. As the park is situated in the dry zone it occasionally receives and average rainfall. The main sources of water for the tank are from the rivers Amban and Elehara canals diversions. The wet seasons lasts during the north eastern monsoon. The main habitats of minneriya are of a variety. Montane forests, high canopy secondary forests, chenas, scrublands, grassy lands and wetlands are a few to be named.
The camp is open for visiting from 6am to 6.30PMand the tickets are priced according to age categories and local and tourist categories and requirements such as camping, accommodation and other. There are NO campgrounds or lodges situated inside Minneriya National Park however there is accommodation in the near vicinity. The safari camp in Minneriya is arranged at the outskirt of the recreation centre, with a magnificent forest boundary atmosphere, which guarantees you're right in the core of nature. Disregard any thoughts regarding cramped tents and sitting on the ground for dinners this is exploring nature in style! The camp is set up before your land, a completely prepared kitchen, seats and tables, lofts, flushable toilets, showers and even icy lager. At night you can appreciate a generous grill feast in a supernatural setting the entire territory is lit up with conventional fire lights and a thundering open air fire. So sit back, unwind yourselves at the grounds of the Minneriya National Park.
